Choosing the Right Flooring for Your St. Louis Home

The most common mistake in flooring installation is choosing a product for aesthetics without considering the room’s moisture environment. St. Louis has genuinely humid summers, and moisture is the enemy of most flooring materials. Getting this right upfront saves a replacement later.

The subfloor condition is equally important. A floating floor installed over a subfloor with significant deflection, soft spots, or level variation will creak, gap, and fail prematurely regardless of how well it is installed. We assess the subfloor before installation and address any issues that need correction first.

What Makes a Flooring Installation Done Right

Subfloor Preparation

Subfloor preparation is the step that separates a floor that looks good on day one from one that holds up for ten years. Tile requires a subfloor that has no flex movement causes grout to crack and tiles to loosen. Vinyl plank requires a level surface within the manufacturer’s tolerance, typically 3/16 inch over 10 feet. Hardwood requires a dry subfloor with moisture content matched to the flooring. We check all of these conditions before the first plank, tile, or board goes down.

Transitions and Thresholds

Where two flooring types meet at a doorway, between rooms, at a stair landing — the transition strip matters both aesthetically and functionally. A transition installed with the wrong reducer profile, misaligned with the flooring height, or secured incorrectly will lift, rattle, or become a trip hazard. We match the transition type to the height difference and the flooring materials on each side.

Baseboards as Part of the Job

Every flooring installation is finished by installing or reinstalling baseboard trim. Baseboards hide the expansion gap required on floating floors and complete the visual transition from floor to wall. We install new baseboards, or carefully remove existing ones before installation and reinstall them after. Nail holes are filled and the trim is caulked and primed for paint.

Dr. Steve’s Take:

Flooring is consistently among the highest-return improvements Dr. Steve recommends before listing a home for sale. Worn carpet, cracked tile, or outdated vinyl in main living areas is one of the first things buyers notice and one of the things they use to negotiate price down. New vinyl plank flooring in a kitchen or entry hall is among the fastest investments to recover at sale.

A Note on Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) in St. Louis

Luxury vinyl plank has become the most requested flooring installation in St. Louis over the past five years, and for good reason. Its waterproof core handles the moisture cycles of a St. Louis basement or kitchen without warping or cupping. It installs quickly, feels comfortable underfoot, and comes in wood-look styles that are convincing at walking distance. It is not hardwood, and it cannot be refinished but for the right rooms and the right homeowner, it is the most practical choice available.
