Kitchen Sink Problems in St. Louis

Kitchen Faucets: Dripping, Spraying Poorly, or Hard to Operate

Kitchen faucets take more abuse than any other faucet in the house — constant switching between hot and cold, sprayer use, and contact with food and grease. The most common failure modes: a drip at the spout (worn cartridge or aerator), a sprayer that has lost pressure (clogged aerator or failing hose), a handle that has become stiff or difficult to operate (failed cartridge or mineral buildup), and a base leak (failed o-ring or loose connection).

We repair what’s repairable. When repair is not the economical choice — on a very old faucet where the parts are no longer available or the body is corroded — we quote replacement alongside repair so you can make an informed decision.

Dr. Steve’s Take:

A kitchen faucet that drips when the handle is in the off position is wasting water every hour of every day. Dr. Steve covers kitchen faucet repair in the same breath as bathroom faucets in his eco-friendly repairs column: the repair pays for itself in water savings within months. If your kitchen faucet has been dripping since last summer, the water it has wasted since then has already exceeded the cost of the repair.

Garbage Disposal Replacement

Garbage disposals fail in specific, diagnosable ways: the motor hums but the grinding plate doesn’t turn (the overload protector has tripped, or the plate is jammed), the unit leaks from the sink flange or the drain connection (worn gaskets or loose mounting), or the unit makes grinding or metallic sounds (bearing failure or hard object in the chamber).

Many disposal “failures” are actually a tripped reset button — there is a small red button on the bottom of the unit that pops out when the motor overloads. Pressing it resets the unit. If the unit runs but grinds poorly, the blades are worn and replacement is the right call. If the unit has leaked at the sink flange, the flange can sometimes be re-sealed without replacing the unit.

Dr. Steve’s Take:

A garbage disposal that hums, rattles, or refuses to turn is a daily kitchen frustration that is completely fixable — and usually quickly. Dr. Steve included non-functioning kitchen equipment in a column on small repairs that restore daily ease. A working garbage disposal is one of those things you stop noticing until it breaks, and one of the things you notice every meal when it doesn’t work.

Leaking Drain Pipes

Leaks under the kitchen sink are almost always at the slip joints in the P-trap and drain pipe assembly, or at the basket strainer — the drain fitting at the bottom of the sink itself. Slip joint washers dry out and crack. Basket strainer putty dries out over time. Either way the result is water dripping into the cabinet below.

We repair the specific failure: tighten or replace the slip joint washer, re-putty the basket strainer, or replace damaged sections of drain pipe. We also inspect the cabinet interior for water staining or damage from previous leaks that may need attention.

Instant Hot Water Dispensers

An instant hot water dispenser — the separate tap near the kitchen faucet that delivers near-boiling water instantly — is a kitchen upgrade that simplifies cooking, tea, and hot beverage preparation. Installation involves mounting the dispenser tap in an existing or new hole in the sink deck, connecting the small under-sink tank to the cold water supply line and a drain connection, and plugging the tank into a nearby outlet
