Common Ceiling Electrical Projects in St. Louis Homes

Ceiling Fan Installation

Ceiling fan installation is one of our most requested ceiling electrical calls. The specific situation determines what’s involved. Installing a new fan where an existing ceiling box is already present is a straightforward swap. Installing a fan where there is currently a ceiling light requires verifying the existing box is rated for fan weight and the torque of a spinning motor standard light-fixture boxes are not rated for fans and must be replaced with a fan-rated box before installation.

Remote-control and smart fan installations including Wi-Fi connected fans that integrate with home automation systems are handled as part of the installation. We configure the controls before leaving.

Dr. Steve’s Take:

A ceiling fan in a St. Louis bedroom can make a meaningful difference in both comfort and energy cost. Dr. Steve included ceiling fans in a column on the small improvements that genuinely reduce daily stress a bedroom that stays cooler in summer without running the air conditioning harder is a quality-of-life improvement that pays for itself. We install ceiling fans in all room sizes and ceiling heights.

Recessed Lighting (Can Lights)

Adding recessed lighting to an existing ceiling is one of the most impactful lighting upgrades available for St. Louis homes. Modern LED recessed fixtures are shallow enough to install in most ceilings without attic access, using flexible conduit to connect to the existing circuit.

We plan the layout based on the room dimensions and the homeowner’s preference, cut the ceiling openings, run the wiring, install and connect the fixtures, and patch any access points. The result is a ceiling that provides uniform, adjustable light without the dated look of a center-mounted surface fixture.

As with all ceiling electrical: we work within existing circuit capacity. If the number of fixtures requested would exceed the circuit’s rated load, we discuss options before any work begins.

Chandeliers, Pendant Lights & Surface Mount Fixtures

Swapping an existing ceiling fixture for a chandelier, pendant, or new surface mount is among the cleanest one-visit electrical upgrades. The existing ceiling box, wiring, and switch are already in place we remove the old fixture, verify the box is rated for the new fixture’s weight, and install the new one.

Chandeliers and large pendant fixtures have specific installation requirements: the ceiling box must be rated for the fixture weight (typically a minimum of 35 lbs for fan-rated boxes, more for heavy chandeliers), and the fixture height must be calculated based on ceiling height and clearance above any table or countertop below.

Dr. Steve’s Take:

Lighting makes a bigger difference in how a room feels than almost any other single change. Dr. Steve covered this in a garage makeover column that extended to interior lighting: replacing a dated ceiling fixture with a properly scaled pendant or updated flush-mount immediately changes the character of a room. Most fixture swaps take 30 to 45 minutes.

Relocating a Ceiling Light Box

Moving a ceiling light to a different position to center it over a dining table, to better position it for furniture arrangement, or after a renovation changed the room layout requires moving the ceiling box, re-routing the wiring, and patching the old opening. This is more involved than a fixture swap but is a single-visit project in most cases. We patch and prime the old opening as part of the work.
