Understanding Your Window Glass Problem

Broken Single-Pane Glass

Single-pane glass — found in older St. Louis homes, garage windows, basement windows, and storm windows — breaks cleanly and is replaced by removing the broken pane, cleaning the glazing channel, cutting new glass to size, and re-glazing. The sash and frame stay in place. This is one of the most straightforward glass repairs there is.

Safety is the first priority when dealing with broken glass. Do not leave a broken pane unaddressed — broken edges are a cut hazard, and an open pane compromises security and weather protection. We can assess urgency when you call.

Foggy Double-Pane Windows and Failed Insulated Glass Units

The fog you see between the panes of a double-pane window is not a cleaning problem — it is a seal failure. The insulated glass unit (IGU) that makes up a double-pane window contains a sealed air space (or argon gas fill) between the two panes. When that seal fails, moist air enters the space, evaporates, and leaves mineral deposits on the interior glass surfaces. The result is the characteristic foggy, hazy, or streaky appearance that gets worse over time.

The only permanent fix for a failed IGU is replacing the glass unit. The sash frame and window hardware stay in place — only the glass unit is replaced. This is significantly less expensive than full window replacement and restores both clarity and thermal performance.

Dr. Steve’s Take:

If your double-pane windows are starting to look foggy or hazy on the inside, they’ve lost their seal and are no longer performing as insulated windows — they’re essentially single-pane at that point, with the added frustration of bad visibility. Dr. Steve covered this in a piece on older homes: the foggy window is one of the most overlooked energy efficiency problems in St. Louis houses.

Picture Windows

Picture windows are large fixed panes that do not open. When the glass breaks or the seal fails, the repair involves removing and replacing just the glass unit within the existing frame. Because picture windows are typically large and heavy, this is not a DIY repair — handling large glass panels safely requires the right equipment and two-person technique.

Window Tinting Film

Window tinting film applied to the interior glass surface reduces solar heat gain, cuts glare, and blocks UV rays that fade furniture, flooring, and artwork. In St. Louis, where west-facing rooms can become uncomfortably warm in summer afternoons, tinting is a cost-effective alternative to replacing glass with a higher-performance IGU.

Dr. Steve’s Take:

Direct afternoon sun is one of the most common reasons St. Louis homeowners complain about hot rooms in summer. Dr. Steve addressed this in a seasonal piece — tinted window film is a fast, affordable fix that works immediately. It’s also reversible, which makes it a better first step than assuming you need new windows.
