Window Types and Their Common Operation Problems

Different window types use different hardware to open and stay open. Understanding the type you have is the starting point for diagnosing the problem.

TypeHow It OpensKey HardwareCommon Repairs
Double-hungBoth sashes slide vertically; upper sash stays up, lower sash stays up independently.Window balances (spiral, block-and-tackle, or coil)Balance replacement; sash cord or weight repair in older wood windows
CasementSash swings outward on hinges, operated by a crank handle at the bottom or side.Crank operator (gear mechanism)Crank replacement; hinge adjustment; alignment correction
Single-hungOnly the lower sash moves; upper sash is fixed.Window balance on lower sashBalance replacement; lower sash adjustment
SlidingSash slides horizontally in upper and lower channels.Rollers and trackTrack cleaning; roller replacement; channel adjustment

The repair approach depends entirely on the window type and the specific hardware that has failed. We diagnose the actual cause before recommending anything.

The Most Common Window Operation Problems in St. Louis

Window Stuck and Won’t Open

A window that won’t open has one of three causes: paint sealing the sash to the frame (extremely common in older St. Louis homes that have been repainted over the years without scoring the sash), wood swelling from humidity that has closed the gap between sash and frame, or failed hardware that has locked the sash in place.

Paint-sealed windows can be freed without damage if the right technique is used — scoring the paint line with a utility knife before applying any pressure. Forcing a paint-sealed window risks breaking the glass or splitting the wood. Wood swelling from humidity is addressed the same way as a sticking door: a measured removal of material from the binding edge. Hardware failure is addressed by replacing the specific component that has failed.

Dr. Steve’s Take:

Dr. Steve dedicated an entire column to sticking windows — it is a far more common St. Louis problem than most homeowners realize, and one that is routinely misdiagnosed as a ‘replacement needed’ situation. In nearly every case the window is fine. It is the paint, the wood movement, or the hardware that needs attention.

From Dr. Steve’s Tips: Sticking Windows — More Than Just a Workout for Your Arms

Window Won’t Stay Open — Failed Window Balances

In a double-hung window, the sash is held in any open position by a balance system. The balance counteracts the weight of the sash so it stays where you put it. When balances fail — and they do fail, usually after 10–20 years of use — the sash drops closed the moment you let go.

There are several balance types used in residential windows: spiral (rod-and-spring), block-and-tackle, and coil. Identifying the correct type and sourcing the right replacement part is the most important step. Installing the wrong balance creates a new problem. We match the replacement to the window manufacturer and weight class.

Dr. Steve’s Take:

Broken or Stiff Casement Window Crank

Casement windows open outward on hinges and are operated by a crank handle at the base or side of the window. The crank connects to a gear operator that drives an arm to push the sash open. When the gears strip, the crank handle spins without moving the window. When the mechanism seizes, the window becomes difficult or impossible to crank.

Crank operator replacement is the standard repair. The key challenge is matching the replacement operator to the original window brand and model. This often requires identifying the window manufacturer and sourcing the correct part — generic cranks do not fit all windows. We handle that sourcing process as part of the repair.
